Daniel F. Maher

Daniel Maher is the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of the Excess Line Association of New York (ELANY). The Association is a statutorily created industry advisory association responsible for facilitating and encouraging compliance with New York’s excess line law.
Mr. Maher joined the association in 1997 and, as a registered lobbyist in New York State, has influenced a number of changes to the New York State insurance law.
Prior to joining ELANY, Mr. Maher served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Lancer Insurance Company from 1985 to 1997 where he was responsible for, among other things, the analysis of insurance policy coverage and commercial and insurance litigation. From 1982 to 1985, Mr. Maher was General Counsel and Secretary for DMT Financial Group and, from 1981 to 1982, he was a Litigation Associate for Greenhill, Speyer & Thurm.
Mr. Maher is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and events all around the country and has been recognized by NAPSLO, PIWA, PIANY and Boys Hope Girls Hope New York with prestigious awards including IBANY’s Insurance Person of the Year Award, 2012. He is publisher/editor of ELANY’s The E&S Empire Express and The Compliance Advisor and was a contributing editor for the ABA publication, Annotations to Surplus Lines Statutes (2nd, 3rd and 4th editions).
Mr. Maher has formerly served on several Boards such as the Industry Education Council to NCOIL, Inc. (2003 to 2009 and 2011 to 2017) and the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation, Inc. (IICF – New York/Northeast Division), from 2007 to 2012. Mr. Maher has continuously served on the IICF’s Grants Committee since 2007.
Mr. Maher holds a Juris Doctor degree from California Western School of Law (1981) and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Journalism/Communications from Rutgers University (1978). He is an attorney licensed to practice in the states of New Jersey and New York and a number of federal courts. Mr. Maher holds the professional insurance designation Association in Surplus Lines Insurance (ASLI) and is a member of American Bar Association (ABA).
Mr. Maher lives in Sea Girt, N.J., with his wife, Christine, and daughter, Kelly.
